Swing handle ash basket by Newt Washburn, Abenaki

A handsome basket by Abenaki basket maker Newt Washburn, also known as Silent Bear. This basket has a finely carved swinging handle; it is made in the Shaker style favored for years by the Sweetser family of basketmakers in Vermont.

The Abenaki nation is recognized by the Canadian government as well as by the state of Vermont.
