Multi-colored ash basket by Henry Cunningham, Penobscot (Maine)
Henry Cunningham is the younger son of master Penobscot basket maker Pam Cunningham. This young man, who is not yet in his teens, is maintaining his family's long tradition of basket making, learning from his mother, but adding his own touches.
Coastal sweetgrass adorns the rim of this multi-colored brown ash basket.
Brown ash is a sacred wood for the Wabanaki. Aromatic sweetgrass is harvested along the Maine Coast.
